NDIS Supported Living: happy participant in accessible home
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
The foundation for independence under the NDIS
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an essential home and daily living support for people with disability who want to live independently but need regular help with everyday tasks. With SIL, NDIS participants receive assistance and coaching from skilled support workers in a shared home or apartment—with support tailored to their own goals, preferences, and abilities. The focus is not only on daily routines (like cooking or cleaning) but on helping you build skills for lasting, life-changing independence.

SIL can include help with personal care, meal planning, medication, laundry, cleaning, filling in forms, community participation, and more. Think of it as having a support team who are also your housemates, helping you lead a safe, empowered, and fulfilling life.
  • Designed for people with higher support needs
  • Delivered in safe, accessible homes
  • 24/7 support available if needed
  • Builds real skills (cooking, budgeting, travel)
SIL is fully approved and funded under the NDIS for eligible participants who cannot live independently without daily (and often overnight) support.

Why is SIL so Important?
A life-changing path to greater freedom and confidence
SIL lets you choose your own path—where to live, who supports you, how you run your home, and how you participate in your community. By reducing reliance on family/informal carers, SIL boosts your self-esteem, develops long-term life skills, and allows you to take real control of your own life.
Benefits include:
  • Live with less stress, knowing support is always there
  • Develop cooking, cleaning, budgeting and social skills
  • Strengthen your daily routines and self-reliance
  • Enjoy friendships, recreation, and community involvement
  • Families have peace of mind and a much-needed break
  • Prevent social isolation, depression, and health crises
More than just a service—SIL is a stepping stone to new friendships, work skills, and personal growth in a supportive, safe environment.

Can I move to SIL from family or group homes?
Yes! In fact, most participants do—SIL supports are ideal for young adults ready to gain more independence or people outgrowing group living.
