What is Short Term Accommodation (STA) & Respite?
An adventure, a break, an opportunity to grow
STA—also known as Respite—is a supported short stay away from home, in a warm, friendly, and fully-equipped environment. Typically lasting from a weekend to several weeks, it creates a chance for participants to recharge, try new things, connect socially, and give their regular carers space to rest.
Respite is more than a break—it’s designed for fun, growth, skills, and new possibilities.

Who Can Access STA? How Is It Funded?
  • NDIS participants needing breaks from home routine (and whose carers need a rest)
  • People transitioning to more independence, trialling living away
  • Anyone facing unavoidable interruption in regular care (carer illness, emergencies, family commitments)
  • Funding is through the “Short Term Accommodation and Assistance” line item within Core Supports
(usually 28 days per year, flexible how you use them)
  • NDIS may fund more if there’s exceptional need—your planner/LAC can advise
STA stays are available for all ages, backgrounds, disabilities; you choose duration and preferred site/group (single, duo, group, family, etc.)

Frequently Asked Short-Term Accommodation Questions

Can I bring my own food, games, or equipment?
Absolutely! STA is your home-away-from-home: bring favourite meals, devices, photos, comfort items, and hobbies.
How far in advance do I book a STA stay?
The earlier the better—weekends and holidays book fast—but emergency/short notice is possible when carers are in crisis or admitted to hospital.
Can my support worker or family visit me during the stay?
Yes—visits and overnights can be arranged with your preferred people (family, friends, even pets by arrangement).
Am I matched with residents/staff before booking?
Always—a “meet & greet” or pre-stay tour is standard so you know who you’ll be living and spending time with.
Does respite affect my other NDIS funds?
No—STA funding comes from its own line in the NDIS budget and will not reduce other supports or allowances.
